Bishop Charles Thompson and Fr. John Davidson celebrated the Saint Anthony Parish 125th Anniversary Mass on Sunday, June 24 at 10:30a.m. Before Mass the congregation gathered in the front yard of the rectory. Fr. Jay announced that in 1872 Anthony and Magdalena Reis built the rectory as their family home. In 1884, Mr. Reis died. The next year his widow donated this parcel of land to the Indianapolis Diocese with the stipulation that the land be used as the site of a Catholic Church to be named in memory of her husband. The first parish Masses were held on the third floor of the rectory in 1888. The current church building was completed in 1896. For the formal consecration of the new church, members paraded from Holy Trinity Church to St. Anthony Church for the Pontifical High Mass.
To honor our history, the Bishop, Fr. Jay, servers and the congregation processed from the steps of the rectory to the doors of the church to recreate the first Mass in the new church. Church bells rang as the choir led the singing of the Litany of the Saints during the procession. 325 people attended the Mass. Following the Mass, around 200 people attended a reception in the cafeteria.
Thank you to all who were involved in any capacity in the liturgy and the reception for this 125th celebration. One parishioner remarked, “ What a gift the celebration was to the parishioners!”
